NASA has achieved a major milestone toward returning humans to the Moon, successfully integrating the Artemis II Orion stage adapter with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. This step brings the mission closer to its planned launch by April 2026.
The Orion stage adapter, developed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, connects the SLS rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion stage to the Orion spacecraft. It also houses a protective composite diaphragm to shield Orion from hazardous gases during launch.
In addition to its structural role, the adapter will deploy four CubeSats for scientific and engineering research once Orion reaches a safe distance from Earth. These 12U CubeSats, developed by international partners from South Korea, Germany, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia, underscore the global collaboration of the Artemis program.
In the coming weeks, NASA technicians will mount the crew-rated Orion spacecraft atop the launch vehicle, finalizing preparations for the test flight. Meanwhile, work on the Artemis III adapter continues, including bracket, avionics, and cable installations for future lunar missions.
The Artemis program aims to establish long-term lunar exploration, foster international cooperation, and lay the groundwork for human missions to Mars, marking a new era of space exploration.
