Narmadapuram's 46 Villages to Get Relief from Surface Water Amid Groundwater Crisis Plan

Surface Water Plan for Narmadapuram Villages Proposed

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 held a high-level review meeting on Wednesday at the Madhya Pradesh Bhawan in New Delhi. A key proposal put forth was the implementation of a surface water-based group water supply scheme to alleviate the groundwater crisis in 46 villages of the Narmadapuram district.

The meeting, chaired by Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, saw Rajya Sabha MP Smt. Maya Narolia highlighting the severe water problem of the district to central ministers and other public representatives. MP Narolia stated that the groundwater level in 46 villages across the Seonimalwa, Kesla, and Pipariya development blocks of Narmadapuram district is continuously declining.

Addressing the Groundwater Challenge

She described this situation as a grave future challenge, noting that excessive groundwater exploitation and inadequate recharge in these areas are creating a worrying scenario. To find a sustainable and technically viable solution, MP Narolia suggested reducing dependence on groundwater.

She proposed initiating a 'Group Water Supply Scheme' utilizing surface water from the Narmada River and major reservoirs in the region. According to her, such a scheme could provide long-term water security to a significant population in these villages.

Focus on 'Har Ghar Nal Se Jal' Implementation

During the meeting, Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil reviewed the implementation of the 'Har Ghar Nal Se Jal' (Tap Water in Every Home) scheme. MP Narolia emphasized that the government's objective extends beyond merely providing taps to every household; it is crucial to ensure that each family receives pure drinking water regularly.

She stressed the importance of developing sustainable water supply systems tailored to local water sources and conditions to achieve this goal. The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Rajbhushan Choudhary, Union Minister Virendra Kumar Khatik, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uike, and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur, among other public representatives.

Members of Parliament from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha from Madhya Pradesh also participated, sharing their views and suggestions on various water supply and conservation issues concerning the state. The serious consideration given to the demand for a surface water-based group water supply scheme for the 46 villages of Narmadapuram district is being seen as a significant step towards the region's long-term water security. This move could help reduce the increasing pressure on groundwater and ensure an uninterrupted supply of drinking water.
