Nalagarh blast: Police widen probe as extremist claims trigger security alert in Himachal

A powerful explosion near a police station in Nalagarh, Himachal Pradesh, has put security agencies on alert, with investigators racing to identify those behind the incident and assess the credibility of online claims of responsibility.

The blast occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, in a narrow lane close to the Nalagarh police station in Solan district, shattering windows of nearby buildings and alarming residents at the start of the new year.

What investigators know so far

According to an official statement issued on January 2, Himachal Pradesh Police confirmed that a Forensic Science Laboratory team had inspected the site and collected samples for analysis.

Police said special teams have been formed to scan CCTV footage from the surrounding area to track suspects and reconstruct movements before and after the explosion.

Authorities have also confirmed coordination with Punjab Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), signalling concern over possible cross-border or interstate links.

Claims of responsibility under scrutiny

A post circulating on social media, allegedly linked to the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International and a lesser-known group calling itself the Punjab Sovereignty Alliance, has claimed responsibility for the blast.

The post alleges the use of an improvised explosive device and describes the attack as retaliation for alleged inaction against drug smuggling routes between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

The message also carries an explicit warning of further attacks on police vehicles and headquarters.

Police have not officially verified or endorsed the authenticity of the post, and senior officers say all digital claims are being examined cautiously.

Scale and impact of the blast

Residents reported that the explosion was heard up to 400 to 500 metres away.

Windows of nearby structures, including an Army canteen located about 40 metres from the site, were cracked due to the impact.

No injuries have been reported so far, but officials acknowledge that the location and timing raise serious public safety concerns.
