Weather Turmoil Hits Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh was hit by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, providing respite from the heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for continued rough weather.

The state experienced a significant drop in temperature following the storms. Bhopal recorded a daytime high of 29.4 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal.

IMD Issues Weather Alerts

The IMD has issued alerts for thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by hailstorms and strong winds in seven northern and eastern districts. A broader caution covers 25 districts, including Bhopal.

The districts under specific hail and wind alerts are: Datia, Bhind, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, Tikamgarh, and Niwari. Residents in these areas should take extra precautions.

Driving Forces Behind the Storms

The weather turbulence is attributed to a western disturbance. This manifests as a trough stretching from north Pakistan to southwest Madhya Pradesh across Punjab and Rajasthan.

Persistent cyclonic circulations over Haryana, northwest Madhya Pradesh, and south Uttar Pradesh also contributed. These systems create the unstable atmospheric conditions leading to the severe weather.

Hailstorms and Rainfall Recorded

Hailstorms were reported in Alirajpur, Badwani, Betul, Khandwa, Agar, Vidisha, Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Damoh, Seoni, and Chhatarpur. Rainfall topped 19 mm in Badnawar. Gusts reached 74 kph in Agar.

 

"More rough weather is expected through the weekend," stated the IMD warning.

 

Looking Ahead

Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy with a daytime high of 30 degrees Celsius and a nighttime low of 18 degrees Celsius in Bhopal. Winds are expected at 12 kph.
