A central government report has raised fresh health concerns in Madhya Pradesh, revealing that the state has the country’s second-highest share of nitrate-contaminated groundwater, behind Uttar Pradesh.
The data, shared by the Union government in August 2025 and based on the 2024 annual groundwater quality assessment, flags 39 districts where nitrate levels are well above safe limits, including Indore, which recently saw 18 deaths linked to sewage contamination in drinking water.
Nitrate levels exceed national safety thresholds
According to the report, groundwater samples in the identified districts recorded nitrate concentrations above 45 mg per litre, the benchmark considered abnormal and unsafe for consumption. Elevated nitrate in drinking water can reduce oxygen levels in the body, posing serious risks for infants, including the potentially fatal blue baby syndrome, as well as complications for the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
Districts across MP show widespread contamination
The centrally commissioned study lists nitrate exceedances in Indore, Agar Malwa, Anuppur, Balaghat, Barwani, Bhind, Burhanpur, Chhindwara, Damoh, Datia, Dewas, Dhar, Guna, Gwalior, Harda, Jabalpur, Jhabua, Katni, Khandwa, Khargone, Mandla, Mandsaur, Morena, Narsinghpur, Neemuch, Panna, Rajgarh, Ratlam, Rewa, Sagar, Satna, Shahdol, Shajapur, Sheopur, Shivpuri, Sidhi, Tikamgarh, Ujjain and Umaria.
Officials noted that Madhya Pradesh ranks second nationwide in the extent of nitrate contamination, trailing only Uttar Pradesh.
Agriculture and sewage cited as major drivers
The report attributes the spike in nitrate load to intensive agricultural practices, especially rice and wheat cultivation, which depend on synthetic nitrogen-based fertilisers. It also highlights poor sewage disposal, leaking septic systems and inadequate wastewater management as contributors.
Experts cautioned that reduced groundwater recharge due to rapid urbanisation and climate shifts is worsening contamination, as lower water volumes fail to dilute pollutants.
Governance challenge with health consequences
The report underlines that water is a state subject, meaning monitoring, protection and regulation of groundwater fall primarily under state government responsibility. The central government currently supports states with technical guidance and financial assistance through national water programmes but does not control local enforcement.
Public health specialists argue that the issue could become a major water safety crisis if ignored, calling for:
