Monsoon Rail Safety: Bhopal Division Gears Up Across 1023 Km of Track

The Cliff News | Bhopal | September 5, 2026 The Bhopal Division of West Central Railway has completed comprehensive preparations to maintain safe, secure, and uninterrupted rail operations during the upcoming monsoon season amidst potential emergencies like heavy rainfall, storms, waterlogging, and floods.

Special monitoring is being conducted across every critical section of the division's approximately 1023 kilometers of rail network, encompassing track, bridges, signaling equipment, electrical systems, and drainage infrastructure. Under the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager Shri Pankaj Tyagi, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Shri Saurabh Kataria stated that a detailed action plan for the monsoon has been prepared, and all relevant departments have been placed on high alert. Risk-prone and sensitive areas have been identified, with additional safety and surveillance measures implemented.

Special Deployment for Continuous Track Monitoring

To ensure continuous monitoring of the rail track and timely identification of any potential hazards, the division has deployed a total of 292 employees, including 118 patrolmen and 174 watchmen, in sensitive areas. These employees will conduct 'monsoon patrolling' regularly in their assigned sections. The primary objective is to immediately detect any damage to the track, waterlogging, or other unusual situations, thereby preventing any adverse impact on rail traffic.

The Bhopal Division's rail network extends to crucial sections such as Khandwa–Itarsi (183 km), Itarsi–Bhopal (92 km), Bhopal–Bina (138 km), Bina–Guna (118 km), and Guna–Maksi (214 km). To maintain safe rail operations across such a large and extensive network, the patrolling and inspection system has been particularly strengthened.

Focus on Bridges and Drainage Systems

A key aspect of rail safety during the monsoon is the security of bridges. The division has identified all dams, bridges, and other critical structures under its jurisdiction and has further tightened their monitoring systems. 'Water Level Alarm Systems' have been installed on sensitive bridges. This system will issue immediate warnings in case of any unusual rise in water levels, allowing for timely action during emergencies.

To tackle waterlogging issues on railway tracks and yard areas, extensive cleaning of drains, culverts, and other drainage channels has been undertaken. Thorough inspections of the drainage system and all necessary maintenance work have also been completed to prevent rainwater accumulation on the tracks and ensure smooth rail operations.

Strengthening Power Supply and Communication Systems

To ensure the safety of overhead equipment on electrified sections, the trimming of excess tree branches that could obstruct rail operations has also been completed. Additionally, regular inspection and necessary maintenance of the track and signaling system are being carried out. To prevent any disruptions to the signaling and communication systems during the monsoon, signal cable checks, meggering, and other technical maintenance work are being performed on a war footing.
