Monsoon Tragedy Strikes Rajgarh

Life has been thrown into disarray in the Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh due to heavy rainfall. A major accident occurred on Monday morning on the Pachor-Sarangpur road when an Eco van attempted to cross a swollen Jhiri Nala (drain/stream) and was swept away by the strong current.

Tragically, 9 bodies have been recovered so far from the van, which was carrying 11 members of a single family. The deceased include three men, two women, and a three-year-old child. Fortunately, two individuals managed to swim to safety.

Rescue Operations Hampered by Swift Currents

Upon receiving information about the incident, local administration and police teams immediately reached the spot. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team launched a rescue operation, but the swift flow of water in the nala presented significant challenges.

The recovered bodies have been taken to Sarangpur for further necessary action. The arduous rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the two missing individuals.

Under-Construction Bridge Cited as Cause

A primary reason for this horrific accident is believed to be the under-construction, incomplete bridge over the Jhiri Nala near the town of Padana. This approximately 30-foot-long bridge was still under construction.

Due to the incessant heavy rains, the water level in the nala rose significantly, with water flowing over the incomplete bridge structure. The strong current and waterlogging obscured the unfinished part of the bridge, preventing the driver from realizing the true depth and danger.

It was in this state of unawareness that the Eco van proceeded into the water and was swiftly engulfed by the powerful current, being swept away within moments.

Family From Dewas District

All occupants of the ill-fated Eco van were residents of the Dewas district. They were en route from Satwas to Kadlavad village. The vehicle was registered in the name of Mukesh Singh Chauhan, a resident of Dhansad village in the Satwas area, and he was driving at the time of the accident.

Unfortunately, only Mukesh Singh Chauhan and his uncle, Hukum Singh, survived by swimming out. The rest of the family members, along with the vehicle, were carried away by the strong currents. A total of 11 people were in the van: 3 men, 4 women, and 4 children.

Grief and Shock Grip the Region

The death of a three-year-old child in this accident has deeply shaken the entire region. The tragic loss of multiple family members has also sent waves of grief through their village in Dewas district. The families of the victims are inconsolable.

Following the news, a large number of villagers and local residents gathered at the accident site. The administration enhanced security measures and conducted rescue operations. Given the strong water flow, people were prevented from entering the nala.

Rivers and Streams Swollen Across Madhya Pradesh

Rajgarh, along with several other districts in Madhya Pradesh, has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall for the past few days. This has led to a rapid increase in the water levels of rivers and streams, with water flowing over bridges and culverts in many places.

Under such circumstances, commuting on rural and smaller routes has become extremely risky. This accident in Rajgarh starkly highlights the dangers of crossing overflowing rivers and streams, and navigating under-construction bridges during the monsoon.

When water flows over a bridge or causeway, it becomes incredibly difficult to estimate its depth and the speed of the current. Authorities are continuously appealing to the public not to risk crossing drains, causeways, or bridges with strong currents and to wait for the water to recede.

This tragic incident, claiming nine lives, serves as a grim warning to exercise caution during the monsoon season, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and strong currents.
