Mohammed Kaif Criticises BCCI for Sacking Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s decision to remove Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain has sparked strong reactions, with former India batter Mohammed Kaif openly criticising the move. Kaif shared a video on Instagram, expressing disappointment that Rohit, who has given 16 years to Indian cricket, was denied even one more year as captain ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Kaif highlighted Rohit’s recent achievements, including his Player of the Match performance in the ICC Champions Trophy final in Dubai and India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory, noting that Rohit had gracefully stepped aside for emerging players while continuing to mentor the team.

While acknowledging Shubman Gill’s potential as a future captain, Kaif questioned the timing of the decision. He said that Rohit had consistently nurtured and guided young players under pressure and deserved an additional year to lead before a transition. Kaif argued that fast-tracking the change was unnecessary, emphasizing the value of experience alongside youth in the team’s leadership.

The controversy also reportedly had the backing of Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, further intensifying debate over the sudden leadership change in Indian cricket.
