Mizoram Eyes National Leadership in HPV Vaccination

Mizoram's Health Minister, Lalrinpuii, has announced the state's current standing as third in India for its Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive. The minister expressed strong confidence that Mizoram can soon achieve the number one position nationwide.

Speaking at the National Immunisation Day (NID) Pulse Polio programme launch in Aizawl, the minister highlighted that Mizoram's manageable population size of approximately 16 lakh facilitates effective quality healthcare delivery. However, she also noted the high public expectations that necessitate continuous improvement in health achievements.

Focus on Intensified Vaccination Efforts

The HPV vaccination program, initiated by the Prime Minister on February 28, has seen significant rollout across the state. Minister Lalrinpuii urged health officials and frontline workers to intensify their efforts to secure the top national ranking.

Officials reported that Lunglei district, located in southern Mizoram, successfully surpassed its vaccination target, achieving 107 per cent coverage. During the campaign, which ran from February 28 to May 31, the district vaccinated 1,326 adolescent girls against a target of 1,243.

Sustaining Polio-Free Status and Immunisation Successes

The Health Minister underscored the importance of ongoing immunisation efforts, even with India being certified polio-free since 2014. She emphasized that strengthening routine vaccination is crucial for maintaining Mizoram's polio-free status.

Minister Lalrinpuii commended the enthusiastic participation of parents in the Pulse Polio campaign, attributing this success to widespread awareness drives. She also praised healthcare workers for their contributions to Mizoram's achievements in securing National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certifications.

Improved Health Indicators and Vigilance Against Polio

Mizoram has seen improvements in key health indicators such as the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR). These accomplishments have earned the state recognition among India’s “Eligible States.”

Additional Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Lalnunmawii Ralte, cautioned that continued vigilance against polio is paramount. Despite no reported cases in India since 2011, the disease persists in neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, posing a potential risk.

The current Pulse Polio campaign is active across all 11 districts of Mizoram. It aims to immunise over one lakh children under five years old at 1,430 vaccination booths throughout the state.
