Mayawati Slams Akhilesh Yadav's 'Chawanni' Remark, Demands Apology from Jat Community

'Chawanni se Rupaya' Remark Ignites Political Row

Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav's 'chawanni se rupaya bana diya' (turned a quarter anna into a rupee) comment regarding the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and its chief Jayant Chaudhary has sparked a new controversy in Uttar Pradesh politics.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati has not only deemed the statement disrespectful and inappropriate but has also demanded an immediate apology from Akhilesh Yadav to the entire Jat community.

Mayawati's Strong Condemnation

Mayawati launched a scathing attack on Akhilesh Yadav through a social media post. She stated that such public remarks by the SP chief towards his former ally RLD and its leader Jayant Chaudhary are against political etiquette.

According to Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav should apologize without delay not just to Jayant Chaudhary and RLD, but to the entire Jat community for allegedly insulting the family of former Prime Minister, the late Chaudhary Charan Singh.

The Origin of the 'Chawanni se Rupaya' Controversy

The entire dispute began when Akhilesh Yadav, at an event, targeted his former political allies by saying that the Samajwadi Party has always promoted its partners. In this context, he taunted that he had 'turned someone into a rupee from a quarter anna,' even though they eventually left his side.

This comment was directly linked to the Rashtriya Lok Dal and its leader Jayant Chaudhary. Following Akhilesh Yadav's remark, the RLD also responded sharply.

Jayant Chaudhary's Rebuttal

Jayant Chaudhary retaliated, stating that if political opposition was intended, it should have been directed by naming him. He objected to targeting the entire Jat community, deeming it inappropriate.

Jayant Chaudhary also criticized Akhilesh Yadav for political arrogance.

Mayawati Questions SP's Stance

In her statement, Mayawati also questioned the overall political approach of the Samajwadi Party. She alleged that the SP's attitude, both towards its opponents and allies, has been narrow-minded and casteist.

Mayawati believes that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has often benefited from this political style of the SP, leading to a weakening of secular forces. The BSP chief emphasized that political parties must pay special attention to language and decorum when attacking opponents.

Distinction Between Political Comment and Societal Insult

She clarified the difference between a political commentary on a leader and a statement that hurts the sentiments of an entire community. Mayawati connected the current dispute not just to Jayant Chaudhary but also to the respect of the family of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and the broader Jat community.

Jayant Chaudhary is the grandson of the late Chaudhary Charan Singh and the son of former Union Minister Ajit Singh. According to the BSP chief, Chaudhary Charan Singh is identified with farmer politics and the voice of rural India.

Respect for Chaudhary Charan Singh's Family

Therefore, political parties need to exercise extreme caution with any remarks made about members of his family. The 'chawanni' remark has once again highlighted the existing political friction between the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

The two parties once had an alliance and contested elections together in western Uttar Pradesh. However, they later went their separate ways politically.

Heightened Political Activity Ahead of 2027 Elections

Currently, ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, various political parties are striving to strengthen their respective social and caste equations. At such a juncture, this controversy involving the Jat community is further intensifying the political heat in western Uttar Pradesh.

Following Akhilesh Yadav's alleged comment, protests have also emerged from members of the Jat community in some areas of western Uttar Pradesh. Protesters have demanded a public apology from Akhilesh Yadav.

Mayawati's Intervention Amplifies the Issue

In this scenario, Mayawati's intervention has lent further political gravitas to the issue. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party has defended Akhilesh Yadav's statement.

Party leaders have stated that the comment should be viewed purely in a political context and was never intended to insult any community. Currently, with Mayawati's direct intervention, the 'chawanni se rupaya' controversy has deepened.

Focus on Akhilesh Yadav's Next Move

While Jayant Chaudhary has retaliated against Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati has intensified her political attack on the SP by demanding an apology from the entire Jat community. All eyes are now on Akhilesh Yadav's next reaction, whether he offers an explanation regarding this controversy or outright rejects the demand for an apology.
