Controversial Statement Sparks Fury

During the sacred Shravan month's Kanwar Yatra across the country, a purported statement by Maulana Sajid Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, has created a new controversy. Citing some isolated incidents during the pilgrimage, Maulana Rashidi allegedly compared some Kanwariyas to 'terrorists' and 'addicts,' drawing sharp reactions from religious and political circles.

According to Maulana Sajid Rashidi, certain individuals indulge in vandalism in a state of intoxication during the Kanwar Yatra, confront police personnel, and damage public property. He stated that it is inappropriate to call such individuals devotees of Shiva. However, many organizations have termed his statement a direct attack on the faith of the entire Kanwar community and millions of Shiva devotees.

Saints Express Deep Anger

Following the Maulana's statement, deep anger has spread within the saint community. Sadhus and saints from various parts of the country, including Haridwar, have described it as a grave insult to Sanatan faith and the devotees of Lord Shiva. Saints contend that the Kanwar Yatra is an extremely important tradition tied to the deep religious faith of millions of devotees.

The majority of devotees complete this pilgrimage with utmost discipline, restraint, and devotion. The saint community has demanded strict action against such statements, asserting that those who make remarks hurting religious sentiments should publicly apologize. This tradition has been ongoing for centuries, and most participants complete their journey with full devotion and discipline. Therefore, holding the entire community accountable due to a few anti-social elements is not justifiable.

Political Parties and Hindu Organizations Criticize

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and various Hindu organizations have also labeled the Maulana's statement as one that creates unnecessary tension in society. BJP leaders argue that if any individual violates the law during any religious journey, action should be taken against them as per rules. However, making a collective comment on an entire religious journey or community based on the misconduct of a few individuals is highly inappropriate and condemnable.

Senior BJP leaders and supporting organizations have emphasized that the Kanwar Yatra is one of India's ancient and glorious religious traditions, with millions participating while adhering to profound devotion and discipline. Such statements serve to spread animosity among different sections of society and are detrimental to national unity.

Kanwar Yatra: A Confluence of Tradition and Discipline

Every year, millions of Shiva devotees embark on their Kanwar Yatra during the month of Shravan. They carry Ganga water from sacred places like Haridwar, Gangotri, Gomukh, and other holy sites to offer it to Shiva temples in their respective regions.

During this time, the administration also makes special arrangements for security, traffic control, and maintaining law and order. However, it is also true that in journeys where such large numbers of people gather, incidents of rule violations or disturbances by some anti-social elements occasionally come to light. In such cases, prompt and effective action is taken by the administration.

Nevertheless, using a few incidents as a basis to question the entire pilgrimage and the faith of millions of devotees participating in it cannot be justified in any way.
