Maihar Anganwadi: Salt-Puri Video Goes Viral, Politics Heats Up; Department Claims Matter is Three Months Old
A viral video from a Maihar Anganwadi showing children allegedly served only salt and puri has sparked political outrage and an official investigation.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage in Maihar Anganwadi
A video from an Anganwadi center in Kakara, Maihar district, Madhya Pradesh, has rapidly gone viral on social media. The footage allegedly shows young children being served only salt and puri, causing a stir within the Women and Child Development Department and prompting an immediate investigation by the administration.
The incident has ignited political debate across the state, with the opposition Congress party launching a sharp attack on the state government. The viral clip depicts children sitting on the ground eating from their plates, which appear to contain only puri and salt, raising serious questions about the quality of nutritional food and monitoring systems in Anganwadi centers.
The primary objective of Anganwadi centers is to protect children from malnutrition and provide them with nutritious meals. Therefore, such a situation involving only salt and puri in the meal is a matter of significant concern.
Investigation Ordered Amidst Outcry
Given the seriousness of the matter, the District Programme Officer (DPO) of Maihar, Rajendra Bangre, ordered an immediate investigation. The responsibility to conduct a detailed probe and submit a report was assigned to the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Akhilesh Dipankar.
The investigation aimed to determine the date of the viral video, identify the staff present at the center at that time, and verify if the children were provided nutritional food according to the prescribed menu. The Women and Child Development Department's investigation report claims the viral video is not recent but approximately three months old. According to the department, the video was recorded incompletely during the food distribution process.
The report also suggests a possible connection to a dispute and fight that occurred in the village on the night of July 26. During that incident, Radhabai, the president of the Shivam Self-Help Group responsible for food distribution, intervened. Her daughter reportedly captured some photos and videos related to the dispute. The department alleges that the opposing party intentionally circulated this old video on social media to pressure Radhabai.
Worker's Absence and Group's Role Under Scrutiny
The investigation further revealed that on the day the video reportedly originates from, Anganwadi worker Suman Jaiswal was on vaccination duty at the Kakara Community Health Center. Consequently, the center's responsibility was managed by the 62-year-old helper, Usha Gautam. Currently, the food distribution for children is under the Shivam Self-Help Group.
In its investigation, the department has cleared the group of any irregularities this time. However, it was acknowledged that the group had been fined previously for irregularities. The department stated that based on the administrative investigation report, further action would be determined.
Congress Launches Fierce Attack on Government
Upon the video's viral spread, the Madhya Pradesh Congress launched a scathing attack on the state government. Jitu Patwari, President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, shared the video on his official 'X' (formerly Twitter) handle, tagging Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and BJP Madhya Pradesh.
In his post, Patwari wrote, "Maihar's Anganwadi! Salt-Puri in nutritional food! The BJP government, which has set records in corruption and commissions by taking loans, is snatching the food from children everywhere! BJP can never be forgiven for this sin.""
The Congress has demanded strict action against those responsible in this case.
Questions Raised Over Nutrition System Monitoring
Anganwadi centers play a crucial role in providing nutritious food, healthcare, and early education to children. In this context, the recent incident related to food distribution once again raises serious questions about the monitoring of the nutritional system. However, the department maintains that the viral video was deliberately presented out of context, and several important facts have emerged during the investigation.
Further action will now be decided based on the administrative investigation report. For now, the matter remains a subject of discussion at both political and administrative levels, and its conclusion is eagerly awaited.
