Madhya Pradesh Prepares Groundbreaking Tiger Action Plan

The Cliff News | Bhopal | August 19, 2026 - Madhya Pradesh is poised to make an unprecedented stride in tiger conservation. Under the directives of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the state is drafting a unique 'Tiger Action Plan'.

This plan aims to effectively manage the increasing tiger population while fortifying their natural habitats, security, corridors, and human-tiger coexistence. It has the potential to establish Madhya Pradesh as a leading state in tiger conservation across the nation.

Madhya Pradesh: The 'Tiger State' Faces New Challenges

Madhya Pradesh currently holds the distinction of being the 'Tiger State'. According to the 2022 national tiger census, the state recorded the presence of 785 tigers.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav recently projected that this number could exceed 1,000 in the upcoming census. Ensuring adequate habitat and conservation arrangements for this burgeoning population presents a significant challenge for the government, prompting the development of this detailed action plan.

A Long-Term Vision: 10-20 Year Action Plan

The proposed Tiger Action Plan is being formulated with a far-reaching perspective, spanning the next 10 to 20 years. This comprehensive strategy will delve deeply into critical issues.

It will address tiger population dynamics, habitat requirements, food availability, expansion of safe roaming areas, strengthening of wildlife corridors, and the sensitive issue of human-tiger conflict. The expertise of national and international wildlife experts and leading research institutions will be leveraged to finalize this ambitious plan.

Expert Committee to Oversee Plan Development

The process of forming an expert committee for the plan's development and implementation is in its final stages. This committee will ensure a scientific and practical evaluation of every aspect of the plan.

The increasing number of tigers is a testament to successful wildlife conservation efforts, but it also brings new and complex challenges. Maintaining sufficient and healthy natural habitats, water sources, and a consistent availability of prey species for tigers is crucial.

Addressing Habitat Fragmentation and Human-Wildlife Conflict

Expansion of road construction, urbanization, and other development projects near forest areas can adversely affect the natural movement routes of wildlife. Additionally, increasing territorial disputes among tigers and their venturing out of forests into human settlements are serious concerns.

Therefore, this proposed plan is not solely focused on increasing tiger numbers but also emphasizes the development of a safe and thriving ecosystem proportionate to the growing tiger population. It seeks to foster a balanced coexistence between humans and wildlife.

Strengthening Corridors for Safe Passage

Prestigious Tiger Reserves like Pachmarhi, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Panna in Madhya Pradesh are part of a vast landscape. Strengthening natural corridors to ensure the seamless and safe movement of wildlife between these major habitats is a key requirement for tiger conservation.

Robust corridors facilitate tigers' safe transit between territories, promoting their natural expansion. This not only reduces over-reliance on a single area but also aids in maintaining genetic diversity among different tiger populations. The development of tiger tourism will also need to be harmonized with these corridors and conservation areas to benefit the local economy without negatively impacting wildlife behavior.

Voluntary Relocation from Core Areas

The voluntary relocation of villages from the core areas of Tiger Reserves has been a significant step towards providing large and undisturbed habitats for tigers. To date, approximately 200 villages have been resettled outside core areas in Madhya Pradesh.

This process has helped create a peaceful and secure environment for tigers in several reserves. Moving forward, wherever relocation is necessary, ensuring the consent of local villagers, fair compensation, better resettlement facilities, and the creation of new livelihood opportunities will be crucial.

Modern Technology for Tiger Monitoring

With the rise in tiger numbers, the need to strengthen their security measures is paramount. Modern technologies such as camera traps, regular patrols, and advanced surveillance systems will play a vital role in effectively curbing criminal activities like poaching and wildlife trafficking.

The Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) and forest department patrol teams will be equipped with modern tools, and surveillance will be enhanced in sensitive areas. The use of technology will enable monitoring of tiger movements and their territories, allowing for the early identification of potential human-tiger conflict zones and the timely implementation of preventive measures.

Preventing Human-Tiger Conflict: A Top Priority

As tiger populations grow, preventing incidents of them venturing out of forests and nearing human settlements is a major priority. The presence of tigers in villages bordering forests poses a serious concern for the safety of villagers and their livestock.

Establishing rapid response teams in such areas, educating local residents about tiger behavior and safety measures, continuous monitoring of tiger movements, and strengthening the timely information system are essential. The Tiger Action Plan will include a strategy to establish a balanced coexistence between humans and wildlife as a significant component.

Harmonious Development of Tourism and Conservation

Madhya Pradesh has witnessed a remarkable surge in wildlife tourism, with its Tiger Reserves becoming major attractions for national and international tourists. In this context, integrating tiger tourism with conservation can create new employment opportunities for local communities.

However, while expanding tourism activities, special attention must be paid to sensitive tiger areas, breeding grounds, and their natural behavior. Responsible tourism not only raises awareness about conservation but also strengthens the local economy.

From 'Tiger State' to Conservation Model

Madhya Pradesh's journey in tiger conservation is the result of decades of continuous efforts. The government is now taking a significant step towards managing the next phase of its growing tiger population.

The proposed Tiger Action Plan is considered a decisive move in this direction. It will integrate comprehensive strategies including scientific studies, expansion of natural habitats, protection of wildlife corridors, modern surveillance technology, control of poaching, active participation of local communities, and reduction of human-tiger conflict. If effectively implemented, Madhya Pradesh could emerge not just in terms of tiger numbers, but as a national model for long-term tiger conservation and management. With a potential tiger population exceeding 1,000, creating safe forests and a balanced ecosystem for them is now the state's top priority.
