Intern Doctors' Strike Turns Aggressive

The protest by intern doctors in Madhya Pradesh, demanding a raise in their monthly stipends, has now taken an aggressive turn. The situation worsened on Tuesday, the second day of the agitation, following incidents of police using force and water cannons against the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, junior doctors have announced their support for the protest by suspending Outpatient Department (OPD) and operation theatre services, casting a serious shadow over the state's government health services. What began as a protest at Bhopal's Hamidia Hospital is now feared to spread across the entire state.

The intern doctors are demanding their current monthly stipend of approximately ₹14,337 be increased to ₹30,000. The protesters argue that they provide regular patient care and perform crucial medical responsibilities in hospitals, for which they deserve adequate remuneration.

Police Action and Escalating Dispute

Following the emergence of videos showing the police using force and water cannons during the protest, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has taken cognizance of the matter. The Bhopal Police Commissioner has ordered an investigation and appointed Vikas Sahwal, DCP Zone-2, as the investigating officer.

The police administration stated that the investigation will be impartial and all parties will be heard. However, reports of injured doctors have escalated the dispute beyond just the stipend demand, transforming it into an issue of police action and respect for medical professionals.

Impact on Health Services

The intern doctors' protest is directly impacting the state's health services. OPD services were affected in several government hospitals from the first day of the agitation on Monday. The situation could worsen further with the announcement by junior doctors to halt OPD and operation theatre services.

If senior doctors also join the protest, patients in government hospitals may face severe problems, with particular concerns arising for emergency services. The lack of essential medical personnel could lead to a critical situation for patient care in the state.

Traffic Disruption and Increased Difficulties

The effects of the protest were also visible on the roads of the state capital, Bhopal, on Tuesday. Demonstrating intern doctors blocked a lane in the Kamla Park area, severely disrupting traffic from Polytechnic Square to Retghat.

Long queues of vehicles formed by the evening, causing significant inconvenience to the general public. If this deadlock is not resolved soon, it is feared that the availability of health services in government hospitals across the state will face further pressure. While it is a challenge for the administration to end the protest, maintaining normal health services remains a priority.
