Stock Limits Implemented for Dealers

The Madhya Pradesh government has set stock limits for sugar dealers and bulk consumers, aiming to curb hoarding and stabilize prices across the state. Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Govind Singh Rajput has instructed all District Collectors to take necessary action.

Under the new directives, no sugar dealer can hold more than 4,000 quintals of sugar. Additionally, dealers are prohibited from storing stock for more than 30 days. To ensure compliance, all dealers must regularly update their stock declarations on the Government of India's Department of Food and Public Distribution portal.

However, this stock limit will not apply to sugar held for distribution through the Public Distribution System (PDS) under the government quota.

New Stock Ceilings for Bulk Consumers

Food Minister Govind Singh Rajput stated that stock holding limits have also been set for bulk consumers. Those using over 10 metric tons of sugar per month as raw material for their production, consumption, or use, will now be restricted from stocking sugar for more than 15 days.

The category of bulk consumers includes businesses such as confectioners, sweet sellers, cold drink manufacturers, and the food processing industry, which have consumed an average of 100 metric tons monthly over the past year.

National-Level Stock Limits Also Applicable

This move is part of nationwide measures taken by the Central government to ensure sugar availability in the market and prevent hoarding. The central government has already imposed a national stock limit of 4,000 quintals for sugar dealers and a 15-day stock limit for bulk consumers from August 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026.

Notably, from September 15, 2026, this limit for dealers will be further reduced to 2,000 quintals per dealer. The state government has directed concerned officials to ensure strict adherence to these orders.
