The Cliff News | 10 September 2026

Madhya Pradesh is set to receive its new VVIP aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger 3500, by the end of September 2026. This state-of-the-art super mid-size business jet will significantly enhance the travel capabilities for the Chief Minister and other VVIPs, replacing the need for costly chartered flights.

The acquisition addresses a long-standing requirement for a dedicated state aircraft, stemming from an incident involving the previous plane in Gwalior in May 2021. Since then, the state government has relied on chartered planes and helicopters, incurring substantial recurring expenses. The purchase of the Challenger 3500 aims to streamline official travel and reduce expenditure on air charters.

New VVIP Aircraft Acquisition

The Bombardier Challenger 3500, known for its advanced features and performance, represents a significant investment in the state's transportation infrastructure. The aircraft's base price is reported to be around ₹250 crore, with total costs, including taxes and other charges, estimated to reach approximately ₹350 crore. This new jet is scheduled to land at Bhopal's State Hangar by the end of September 2026, marking a new era for VVIP travel in Madhya Pradesh.

Aircraft Specifications and Capabilities

The Challenger 3500 boasts impressive specifications designed for efficient and comfortable long-range travel. It has a flight range of approximately 5,900 to 6,290 kilometers, allowing for non-stop journeys across significant distances. Its maximum speed reaches around 870 kilometers per hour, ensuring swift transit for official duties. The cabin is configured to accommodate 8 to 10 passengers, along with 2 crew members, providing a secure and private environment for high-ranking officials.

Rationale Behind the Purchase

The need for a dedicated VVIP aircraft became critically apparent after a landing incident involving the previous state aircraft in Gwalior in May 2021. This event left the state without its own dedicated aviation asset. Consequently, the Madhya Pradesh government faced escalating costs associated with chartering aircraft for the Chief Minister's and other VVIPs' official tours. The purchase of the Bombardier Challenger 3500 is a strategic decision to ensure consistent availability, enhance security, and achieve long-term cost savings compared to perpetual charter arrangements.
