Bhopal: The process of updating Madhya Pradesh’s voter rolls formally began this week with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjeev Kumar Jha convening a meeting of recognised national political parties in Bhopal on Tuesday. The meeting marked the launch of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls — a key preparatory step ahead of future elections.

The exercise, conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India (ECI), aims to ensure that every eligible citizen is included in the electoral database and that errors, duplications, and outdated entries are removed.

Political Parties Briefed on Procedure

During the meeting, Jha detailed the procedures that will guide the revision process and emphasised the importance of political parties appointing booth-level agents to support transparency and accuracy.

He also clarified that the existing electoral roll has been frozen with the commencement of the SIR process, meaning no further additions or deletions can occur until the revision schedule begins.

Representatives present included JP Dhanopia (Congress), Bhagwandas Sabnani and SS Uppal (Bharatiya Janata Party), and Sumit Chauhan (Aam Aadmi Party). However, delegates from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were absent.

The meeting came a day after the ECI announced the second phase of its nationwide Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and Union Territories, covering nearly half of India’s one-billion-strong electorate.

Jha said the 2003 voter list has been made available for reference on the official websites of both the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer, Madhya Pradesh, for cross-verification.

• Training for Block Level Officers (BLOs): October 28 – November 3, 2025

• Door-to-door voter verification: November 4 – December 4, 2025

• Draft voter list publication: December 9, 2025

• Document verification: December 9, 2025 – January 31, 2026

• Final electoral roll publication: February 8, 2026

“The exercise will ensure that no eligible voter is left out and that ineligible names are systematically removed,” Jha told the media after the meeting.

To facilitate citizen participation, Jha explained the use of standard electoral forms:

• Form 6 – for new voter registration

• Form 7 – for deletion of names

• Form 8 – for corrections or amendments

He also cautioned that submitting false declarations in any of these forms constitutes a legal offence, punishable by fines or criminal proceedings under election laws.

Election officials said that the three rounds of BLO verification would include in-person visits to every household, cross-checking identification documents, and updating records digitally through the National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) and the Voter Helpline App.
