Madhuri Dixit Returns as a Serial Killer in Web Series Mrs Deshpande

After The Fame Game (2022), Madhuri Dixit is back on the digital screen in Mrs Deshpande, streaming on JioHotstar. She plays Seema Deshpande, a former restaurateur with a dark appetite for murder—she has killed eight people but has only been convicted for one.

The series opens with Seema serving her prison sentence, running the jail kitchen, and practising yoga. When a new serial killer emerges in Mumbai, following a modus operandi identical to hers, Commissioner Arun (Priyanshu Chatterjee) enlists her help. Inspector Tejas (Siddharth Chandekar) is assigned to collaborate with Seema, but he remains suspicious, believing she may be manipulating the police to aid an escape.

Based on the French show La Mante, the six-episode series is directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, co-written with Rohit Banawlikar, and packs in twists and masala akin to Seema’s culinary flair. The investigation impacts Tejas’s personal life, including his wife Tanvi (Diksha Juneja), grandfather Dinanath (Pradeep Welankar), and Tanvi’s friend Divya (Nimisha Nair).

While Seema’s character is meant to evoke iconic killers like Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan, Dixit leans on her star charisma rather than the depth of a complex inner life. Her magnetism shines when manipulating suspects, but conveying Seema’s darker psychological layers proves challenging. Siddharth Chandekar as Tejas delivers a more nuanced performance, especially in early episodes, making his character stand out alongside Dixit.

Themes of love, cruelty, and vigilante justice drive the narrative, but the show often relies on surface-level thrills and Dixit’s star power to keep audiences engaged, rather than fully exploring the psychology of crime.
