Lucknow Declared UNESCO ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’

Lucknow has officially been designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, earning global recognition for its centuries-old Awadhi cuisine, rich culinary traditions, and inclusive cultural heritage. The announcement was made during the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference currently being held in Uzbekistan.

The Uttar Pradesh government hailed the honour as a historic milestone, positioning Lucknow among the world’s leading gastronomic destinations and highlighting how food heritage can serve as a bridge for cultural diplomacy and sustainable tourism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the city, writing on X, “Lucknow is synonymous with a vibrant culture, at the core of which is a great culinary culture. I am glad that UNESCO has recognised this aspect of Lucknow.”

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the recognition reflects the state’s growing global presence. “Culinary tourism has been attracting visitors to Uttar Pradesh for generations. This recognition strengthens our role in India’s growth story,” he said.

The U.P. government noted that the new status will enhance food-based entrepreneurship, global outreach, and sustainable tourism. Lucknow recorded nearly 82.7 lakh visitors in 2024, and over 70.2 lakh tourists in the first half of 2025, underscoring how food and culture are driving tourism growth in the state.
