LPU Rape Probe: No Clues Found in 100+ CCTV Hours

Authorities in Punjab have scoured more than 100 hours of CCTV footage and interviewed hundreds of students and staff, but have yet to uncover any evidence or leads regarding the alleged rape incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU). The investigation faces an unprecedented situation where neither a victim nor a suspect has been identified, despite an FIR being registered for the offense.

The probe gained urgency after a massive student protest erupted on and off campus, temporarily disrupting traffic on National Highway-44. The demonstration later turned violent, prompting police intervention.

Unidentified Alleged Offense

The Punjab Police have deployed half a dozen teams to meticulously examine CCTV footage from the vicinity of Girls Hostel No. 3, where the alleged crime is said to have occurred. These efforts include reviewing footage from three days prior to the incident.

DIG (Jalandhar Range) Naveen Singla stated that despite scrutinizing cameras on each floor of the hostel, no incriminating evidence of an unauthorized male presence has been found. The situation began with student rumors of a rape, which escalated into significant public unrest.

Investigation Challenges

A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, described the investigation as unique, highlighting the absence of both a victim and a suspect, while student belief in the offense remains strong. The FIR itself is noted for its phrasing, reportedly describing an act of rape without specifying a victim or perpetrator in the conventional sense.

Despite these challenges, police are pursuing all avenues, including extensive interviews with students and hostel staff, and thorough analysis of available CCTV data. LPU claims to have over 7,400 CCTV cameras across its campus, necessitating a focused approach on relevant areas rather than attempting to scan all feeds.

Special Investigation Team Formed

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to handle the case. The team includes Jalandhar Rural SP (Detective) Vineet Ahlawat, Phagwara SP Major Singh, CIA Staff in-charge Balwinder Singh, and Inspector Amanpreet Kaur. They are actively recording statements from students, wardens, and university administration to establish the facts.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav has assured students of a comprehensive investigation into all allegations. He emphasized the formation of the high-level SIT and pledged coordination with the university administration to address student grievances, such as the demand for all-women staff in girls' hostels.

Protest and Subsequent Violence

The protests, initially peaceful, escalated on Sunday evening with reports of police vehicles being torched. The DGP confirmed that elements attempting to disrupt the atmosphere were identified and that action would be taken against those involved in the violence. Scientific and technical analysis, including CCTV footage, is being used to identify individuals responsible for the unrest.

Earlier reports indicated that investigators faced initial difficulties, with the probe hitting a wall even before significant progress could be made.

The police have stated their commitment to a detailed inquiry, ensuring all concerns raised by the students are addressed through established procedures and dialogue with the university.
