Assam's star boxer Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her 29th birthday today by winning the gold medal in the 75 kg category at the 2026 Asian Games. This significant victory marks her as the second Indian woman to achieve an Asian Games boxing gold, following the footsteps of the legendary Mary Kom.
The momentous win came after a dominant performance in the final held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where Borgohain defeated China's Bao Ziyi with a decisive 5-0 score. This gold medal is India's 12th at the ongoing Asian Games 2026.
A Birthday Triumph for Borgohain
Turning 29 proved to be an unforgettable birthday for Lovlina Borgohain, as she gifted herself and the nation a coveted gold medal. The triumph is particularly sweet after she secured a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games, fueling her and her family's aspirations for the top podium finish this year.
Her father, Tiken Borgohain, shared his joy with The Times of India, recounting a happy video call with his daughter post-victory. "She was very happy and looked confident for the final as well. Like any other parents, we also expect that she will bring gold this time," he stated, reflecting the family's unwavering support and belief in her capabilities.
Dedication Through Rigorous Training and Diet
The journey to this prestigious gold medal was paved with rigorous training and strict dietary discipline. Hailing from Baramukhia village in Assam's Golaghat district, Borgohain's commitment to her sport has been evident throughout her career.
Her trainer, Padum Boro, who first recognized her talent, detailed the athlete's disciplined routine. "From the first day, I focused on her basics. She is a tall boxer, and that is a huge advantage for her. I prepared her to win international medals," Boro explained, highlighting Borgohain's dedication and physical attributes.
Borgohain's training schedule was exceptionally demanding, often involving double sessions daily. "She trains early in the morning. She would get up at five. We would start at six in the morning. For two hours we would train till eight. Then there will be an afternoon session from three to six. We would have a double session every day," Boro revealed.
Maintaining Peak Physical Condition
A crucial aspect of Borgohain's preparation was her strict diet, meticulously managed to maintain her weight for the 75 kg boxing category. This disciplined approach, however, sometimes meant competing under challenging physical conditions.
"She maintains a strict diet and eats whatever she is given in the SAI centre. She starts her day with two eggs. And then at night two as well. At lunch and dinner, we have chicken, or fish," Boro elaborated on her dietary intake. He further added that she was working hard to bring the gold medal home, even playing the last two matches in a slightly weaker health condition due to her weight management regime.
A Legacy in the Making
Lovlina Borgohain's victory not only adds another significant medal to India's tally at the Asian Games but also solidifies her position as one of the nation's leading boxers. Her achievement is an inspiration to aspiring athletes across India, particularly young women in sports, demonstrating that dedication and perseverance can lead to remarkable success.
The Boxing Federation of India and sports enthusiasts across the country have lauded her performance, celebrating this historic moment for Indian sports. The nation eagerly awaits further contributions from Borgohain as she continues her illustrious career.
