Kumar Sanu Files ₹50 Crore Defamation Suit Against Ex-Wife

Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu (Sanu Bhattacharjee) has filed a ₹50 crore defamation suit in the Bombay High Court against his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya, alleging that her recent interviews and social media posts have severely damaged his reputation. The case is listed under Sanu Bhattacharjee @ Kumar Sanu v. Rita Bhattacharya & Anr.

The suit seeks a permanent injunction restraining Bhattacharya and online platforms like Google and Meta from publishing or circulating allegedly defamatory content about Sanu and his family. An urgent hearing for interim relief is expected before Justice Milind Jadhav on December 24, 2025.

Sanu’s legal team claims that interviews in September 2025 on YouTube channels Film Window, Viral Bhayani, and Siddharth Kannan contained false and scandalous allegations about his conduct during their marriage. The videos, widely circulated as clips and reels, collectively garnered over 1.5 million views, causing alleged harm to his goodwill and professional prospects.

The singer contends that these statements breach consent terms recorded in their 2001 divorce proceedings, which required both parties to avoid making allegations against each other. He alleges that Bhattacharya’s recent statements revive old grievances after 32 years, amounting to contempt of court and breach of contract.

Sanu has quantified his claim at ₹50 crore, broken down as:

• ₹15 crore for alleged actual commercial losses (cancellations, reduced fees, lost endorsements)

• ₹10 crore for damage to professional reputation and goodwill

• ₹15 crore for mental agony, humiliation, and distress

• ₹10 crore as exemplary/punitive damages to deter similar actions

The plaint also seeks:

• A written apology from Bhattacharya to be published in newspapers

• Takedown orders against social media platforms and “John Doe” entities to remove existing content and block future uploads

Sanu cites prior Delhi High Court orders protecting his personality and publicity rights, asserting that Bhattacharya’s actions further infringe on these rights and have led to a decline in professional opportunities along with an increase in abusive social media comments.
