KL Rahul Set to Return as India’s ODI Captain; Shubman Gill Ruled Out of South Africa Series

KL Rahul is poised to return as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, with Shubman Gill officially ruled out due to a more serious neck injury than initially expected, PTI reported. The series begins on November 30 in Ranchi, and Gill’s prolonged recovery has forced selectors to look for a stop-gap leader.

Gill first picked up the injury while batting during the opening Test in Kolkata. What initially seemed like a minor neck spasm has now revealed deeper complications. He missed the second Test in Guwahati and is currently undergoing extensive scans and consultations in Mumbai. According to BCCI officials, the issue may involve muscular or nerve-related damage, not just a routine spasm.

A board source said, “All tests are being conducted to determine whether it’s a muscular strain or a nerve-related issue.” Gill has reportedly received an injection to control symptoms and will require rest before beginning rehab. His participation in the T20I series starting December 9 is also doubtful.

Gill further met spinal specialist Dr Abhay Nene, and his medical findings have been shared with chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Captaincy Options Narrow Down

With Gill sidelined and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer also unavailable due to a rib-cage injury sustained during the Australia tour, the selectors explored three captaincy options:

1. Rishabh Pant

Considered briefly, but ruled out due to lack of recent ODI game time. Pant has played only one 50-over match in the last year while recovering from his long-term injuries.

2. KL Rahul (Front-Runner)

India’s first-choice ODI wicketkeeper and a former captain, Rahul now stands out as the most stable and experienced option. The upcoming series will mark his return to leadership after nearly two years — he last captained India during the 2023 South Africa tour.

3. Shreyas Iyer

Unavailable, as he continues recovery from a spleen-related injury and is expected to remain out for at least two more months.

Given these factors, the selectors are prioritizing continuity and stability, making KL Rahul the natural choice to lead India in South Africa.
