Pathirana's Availability in Doubt

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are facing a major setback ahead of IPL 2026. Their big-money signing, Matheesha Pathirana, is uncertain to play due to a hamstring injury sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026.

KKR spent Rs 18 crore on Pathirana in the mini-auction. However, his participation is now in jeopardy.

Reports indicate that KKR has been booking and cancelling flights for Pathirana, awaiting clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

"They are yet to confirm about his joining. We are in constant touch and almost every day tickets are being booked and cancelled for him," a KKR source told PTI.

Pace Attack Decimated

KKR's pace bowling options have been severely depleted. Mustafizur Rahman, bought for Rs 9.20 crore, was released following a BCCI directive amid India-Bangladesh diplomatic issues.

Their lead Indian pacer, Harshit Rana, suffered a serious knee injury just before the T20 World Cup 2026, likely ruling him out of the entire IPL season.

Replacements and Team Strategy

To counter these setbacks, KKR has signed Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur. However, they are yet to announce a replacement for Harshit Rana.

Led by Ajinkya Rahane and coached by Abhishek Nayar, KKR aims for a better season after finishing eighth in IPL 2025, their joint-lowest.

Season Opener Approaching

KKR's campaign begins on March 29 against Mumbai Indians (MI). The team needs to quickly address the bowling concerns to have a competitive start.
