Kenya bids to host 2029 World Athletics Championships

Kenya has officially put forward its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, aiming to make history as the first African nation to stage the sport's premier global event. The East African nation's capital, Nairobi, is vying for the prestigious hosting rights against formidable contenders.

Nairobi's bid faces stiff competition from established sporting hubs, with London, Rome, and Munich also submitting their proposals. A decision on which city will be awarded the 2029 championships is anticipated from World Athletics next month.

Athletics Kenya has described its bid as "robust," emphasizing that it is strongly supported by the Kenyan government. The organization believes it presents a "compelling case" to bring the championships to the African continent for the first time.

"The government has committed its full support to the bid, ensuring the necessary organisational framework, security measures and modern infrastructure required to host a world-class global showpiece," a statement from Athletics Kenya read.

The government's pledge signifies a commitment to providing the essential resources and infrastructure needed for a successful international event. This includes guaranteeing robust organizational structures and advanced security protocols, alongside ensuring that the necessary modern facilities are in place.

Kasarani Stadium Eyed as Venue

According to BBC Sport Africa, Kasarani Stadium has been identified as the intended venue for the championships. The stadium boasts a significant capacity of 48,000 spectators, making it a suitable location for a global sporting spectacle.

Kenya's Rich Athletics Legacy

Kenya possesses a profound and illustrious history in athletics, particularly excelling in middle- and long-distance running events. The nation has accumulated an impressive medal tally on the global stage, boasting 72 World Championship gold medals and 38 Olympic gold medals.
