Katni Municipal Corporation Renames Settlements with Caste Identities After Great Saints

Historic Decision for Social Harmony

Katni Municipal Corporation Council has taken a historic decision aimed at fostering social harmony and equality. The council has approved the renaming of settlements previously identified by caste names to honor great saints of India.

The objective behind this decision is to strengthen social cohesion and promote a sense of equality among all sections of society. This initiative seeks to move beyond caste-based identities and connect communities with the ideals of revered personalities.

Renaming Reflects Harmony and Respect

In a resolution passed during the council's meeting on April 15, 2026, the settlement in Veer Savarkar Ward No. 12, previously identified with a specific caste group, has been renamed 'Sant Ravidas Nagar'. Similarly, the settlement for sanitation workers in Ramnivas Singh Ward will now be known as 'Maharshi Valmiki Nagar', and the Harijan settlement in Mahatma Gandhi Ward will be renamed 'Maharshi Sudarshan Nagar'.

Corporation Chairman Manish Pathak described the decision not merely as a name change but as a symbol of social consciousness, respect, and harmony. He stated, "The great saints of India have given us invaluable messages of equality, humanity, and service through their lives. It is a matter of pride for every citizen to be identified by their names, and this will inspire future generations to draw inspiration from their ideals."

Pathak emphasized that Katni Nagar Nigam is continuously striving for social amity, equal opportunities, and respect for all communities. He asserted that the council's decision will further strengthen social unity.

Action to be Implemented Immediately

The Municipal Corporation administration has commenced the process of installing new nameplates in the respective settlements. Furthermore, the necessary amendments in government records are also being initiated to ensure the official registration of the new names.

This initiative is expected to deepen the spirit of social harmony in Katni. The administration aims to instill a sense of unity and shared pride among residents by associating their living spaces with the revered legacies of saints.
