Kane Williamson Retires from T20 Internationals, to Focus on Test Cricket

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has officially announced his retirement from T20 internationals, ending months of speculation about his future in the format. However, the 35-year-old reaffirmed his commitment to Test cricket, with his next assignment being the three-match home series against West Indies starting December 2 in Christchurch.

Williamson made his T20I debut in 2011 and went on to play 93 matches, scoring 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44 with 18 half-centuries and a top score of 95. He captained New Zealand in 75 T20Is, including T20 World Cup semi-finals in 2016 and 2022 and the final in 2021, where the Kiwis finished runners-up.

Calling time on his 13-year T20I career, Williamson said, “It’s something that I’ve loved being a part of for a long time. It’s the right time for myself and the team—it gives clarity ahead of the T20 World Cup.”

New Zealand coach Rob Walter praised Williamson’s contribution, calling him “a magnificent team man” whose influence “goes far beyond performance.”

Williamson has already passed on the white-ball captaincy to Mitchell Santner, while rising stars like Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, and Mark Chapman are expected to take on key roles in the T20 setup.

Williamson is likely to feature next for Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield from November 26, as preparation for the upcoming Test series against West Indies.
