The Indian automobile market set new sales records in July 2026. Wholesale sales of passenger vehicles (cars) reached an all-time high for the month, while demand for two-wheelers saw a notable increase of over 20 percent year-on-year.

This double-digit growth reflects strong consumer demand, availability of new models, favorable financing schemes, and an improved buying sentiment in both rural and urban areas. The performance of the passenger vehicle segment in July 2026 was particularly commendable.

Passenger Vehicle Segment Shows Strong Performance

Wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market reached 4,57,810 units, a significant 34.3 percent increase compared to July 2025. Retail demand for cars also remained robust, leading to an approximately 19 percent rise in passenger vehicle registrations, surpassing 4.1 lakh units.

New Models and Attractive Financing Boost Sales

A key factor behind the unexpected surge in the car market has been the continuous launch of new models and their variants by vehicle manufacturers. Motorcycle sales grew by 20.7 percent to reach 10,74,796 units, while scooter sales saw a 23.7 percent increase, reaching 7,98,190 units. The moped segment also experienced a substantial demand improvement, with sales rising by 48.6 percent to 50,497 units.

This surge in two-wheeler sales is attributed to the revival of demand in both rural and urban markets. Improved economic activities in rural areas and the growing need for personal transportation in urban centers have supported the demand for two-wheelers. Additionally, new and attractive designs, modern features, and a wide range of models available across different price points are attracting customers.

Overall Retail Sales Set Records

The overall picture of the Indian auto market in July 2026 was extremely positive. Across all vehicle categories, retail sales reached approximately 25.9 lakh units, an increase of about 26 percent compared to the same period last year. This is considered the highest record for the month of July to date.

Shift in Fuel Options: Growing Share of CNG and Electric

In the car segment, the share of vehicles with alternative fuels (such as CNG, hybrid, and electric) is continuously strengthening compared to petrol. In July 2026, the combined share of CNG, hybrid, and electric cars was 40.6 percent, while traditional petrol cars accounted for 41.7 percent.

The gap between the two has now narrowed to around one percentage point, indicating a change in preferences among Indian consumers and growing environmental consciousness.
