Journalists Demand Action After Alleged Assault

In protest against the alleged mistreatment and assault of a journalist in Gonda on September 29, 2026, the Rural Journalists Association has submitted a ten-point memorandum to the Chief Minister. The association is demanding strict action against the Umri Begumganj police station in-charge, a high-level inquiry into the incident, and the suspension of the concerned station house officer.

Journalists also urged the inclusion of CCTV footage from the incident site in the investigation. The memorandum specifically calls for an impartial inquiry into the incident involving journalist Atul Tiwari and the arrest of the perpetrators. Furthermore, pressure is being exerted for the swift arrest of those responsible for the attack on journalist Satyam Mishra. This incident raises serious concerns regarding the safety and dignity of journalists.

Prioritizing Journalist Safety and Communication Channels

The ten-point memorandum submitted by the Rural Journalists Association includes key demands related to journalist safety, respect, and healthcare facilities. A significant proposal from the association is to organize monthly journalist-officer meetings at the block level. The aim is to disseminate information about government schemes to journalists, who can then relay it to the general public.

Additionally, the association has requested that relevant government departments inform the concerned journalist about the actions taken based on published news reports. A proposal has also been put forth for the formation of an independent, multi-member committee to address journalists' grievances.

Healthcare and Warning of Agitation

Regarding health services, journalists have requested priority access to cashless medical facilities at Gonda Medical College and community health centers. The association has issued a clear warning to the administration: if the demands are not met with the expected action within a week, the organization will resort to democratic and peaceful protests and demonstrations.

The memorandum submission event was attended by hundreds of journalists, including Divisional President Anil Kumar Dwivedi, District President Pradeep Tiwari, and Women's Wing President Richa Soni.

Teachers' Union Pledges Support to BJP Candidate

Separately, a meeting of the district unit of the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Teachers' Association was held at Swami Vivekananda Inter College. Presided over by District President Radha Mohan Pandey, the meeting unanimously decided to support BJP candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Khand Teachers' Constituency in the upcoming Legislative Council elections in 2026. The teachers present expressed their support for sending Dhruv Kumar Tripathi to the Legislative Council for the fourth consecutive term.
