Jordi Alba to Retire at End of MLS Season, Closing Stellar Football Career

Former Spain and Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has announced he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season, bringing an end to a decorated career spanning nearly two decades.

Alba made the announcement on Tuesday via a video shared on Instagram, reflecting on his career with gratitude and satisfaction. “The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life. I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, with peace, and with happiness,” he said.

From Barcelona Youth to Global Stardom

Alba began his journey in the Barcelona youth academy, but was initially released for being considered “too small.” He later joined Valencia before returning to Barcelona in 2012 for a transfer fee of €14 million ($16.34 million). Over 11 seasons with the Catalan club, Alba became a cornerstone of one of Europe’s most formidable teams.

During his tenure at Barcelona, he won:

In 2023, Alba moved to Inter Miami in the MLS, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez.
