Hollywood actor Jim Caviezel, who famously portrayed Jesus in Mel Gibson’s 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ, will not be returning for the upcoming two-part sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ. The announcement comes as Lionsgate gears up to release the films in 2027, with production slated to begin soon in Rome.
The original film, a landmark in religious cinema, focused on the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life and featured Caviezel alongside Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. Both Bellucci and Caviezel will not return, and other key roles are expected to be recast, according to US media reports.
The Sequel’s Release and Production Details
After nearly a decade in development, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027. The second installment will follow on May 6, 2027. Production will reportedly take place in Rome, maintaining the epic scale and historical authenticity that characterized the original film.
Gibson will produce the films alongside his longtime collaborator Bruce Davey under Icon Productions, ensuring continuity in the creative vision despite the casting changes.
