An armed encounter erupted on Monday in the dense forests of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, during a joint search operation by security forces. According to officials quoted by PTI, troops had launched a cordon-and-search mission in the Mandal–Singhpora belt, close to Sonaar village, when militants opened fire.

How the encounter started

Security agencies were acting on intelligence inputs suggesting that Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives were hiding in the forested region. As forces tightened the cordon around the suspected hideouts around midday, the militants reportedly fired first, triggering a gun battle.

Personnel from the Army, local police, and specialised units remain deployed at the site, with reinforcements brought in due to the difficult terrain.
