Strengthening India-Russia Relations

New Delhi | Moscow | August 24, 2026 - Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a significant meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday. The discussion focused on further strengthening India-Russia relations and preparations for the upcoming annual summit.

Jaishankar is on an official visit to Russia from August 23-24, aimed at giving a new dimension to the strategic partnership between the two nations. The meeting placed particular emphasis on enhancing bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Boosting Bilateral Trade and Economic Cooperation

Both sides deliberated on steps to address trade imbalances, promote Indian exports, and facilitate payment mechanisms between the two countries. Notably, India and Russia have set an ambitious target to reach $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.

Expanding Cooperation in Energy and Connectivity

Energy cooperation was a key topic of discussion. Continued collaboration with Russia in oil, gas, and nuclear energy is deemed crucial for ensuring India's energy security. Discussions also covered enhancing connectivity between the two countries via the Northern Sea Route and other transport corridors to make trade and logistics more efficient.

Renewed Momentum for Defence Partnership

Further advancing the long-standing strategic partnership in the defence sector was also on the agenda. Measures to ensure the seamless availability of essential defence equipment and spare parts for the Indian armed forces, as well as increasing cooperation in defence production, were discussed. This collaboration will help strengthen the defence preparedness of both nations.

Alignment on Global and Regional Issues

The meeting also involved an in-depth exchange of views on regional and global developments. Both countries stressed the need for mutual cooperation in adopting a firm stance against terrorism and maintaining regional stability. An agreement was reached to maintain regular dialogue on various international issues, reflecting their coordinated role on global platforms.

Preparations for Annual Summit

During Jaishankar's visit to Russia, the 27th meeting of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation was also held. This meeting is considered highly important in preparation for the upcoming India-Russia Annual Summit, where further deepening cooperation in key areas like trade, energy, defence, and connectivity will be prioritized.
