Strategic Partnership Strengthened in New Delhi

In a significant step towards strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar, Tanzania, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a high-level meeting with Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi. The meeting took place in New Delhi, with President Mwinyi on a four-day visit to India.

Both sides expressed significant agreement on further expanding bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as education, health, water supply, digital technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening academic ties through the exchange of shared knowledge and expertise.

New Dimensions of Cooperation: Water, Digital, and AI

During President Mwinyi's visit, discussions also covered the management and efficient use of water resources. Specifically, possibilities for ensuring access to clean drinking water and enhancing cooperation in water-based projects were deliberated upon. Furthermore, both sides emphasized strengthening partnerships in the development of digital infrastructure and information technology.

A crucial aspect of the meeting also involved cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Both nations recognized AI's growing potential and its applicability across various sectors. Joint initiatives to promote the use of AI in future research, development, and skill development were considered.

Dr. Jaishankar described the meeting as a significant step forward in advancing the shared development agenda between India and Zanzibar. He stated on the social media platform 'X' that India and Zanzibar held detailed discussions on strengthening partnerships in higher education, capacity building, water resources, health services, digital infrastructure, and Artificial Intelligence.

This meeting underscores the commitment of both countries to further deepen friendly relations and promote people-centric development. It is a testament to India's 'Neighbourhood First' and 'Stronger Ties with Africa' policy, under which India is committed to enhancing economic, social, and technical cooperation with African nations. Zanzibar, with its strategic location and growing tourism and trade, is a significant partner for India in Africa.
