Samudra Manthan and Neelkanth's Sacrifice

Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh - August 9, 2026: The musical Shri Shiv Mahapuran Katha, currently underway at Vrindavan Garden in Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh, entered its third day with a detailed narration of the Samudra Manthan (Ocean Churning) episode. Acharya Param Shraddhey Pandit Shri Naval Kishore Ji Shastri, from Vrindavan Dham, explained that deities and demons undertook this great churning of the Ksheer Sagar (Milky Ocean) to obtain the nectar of immortality.

During the narration, Acharya Shastri revealed that the Mandarachal mountain served as the churning rod and Vasuki Naga as the rope. Lord Vishnu assumed the Kurma avatar to support the mountain. This historic churning yielded 14 precious items, including the devastating Halahal poison, along with divine powers.

Lord Shiva Becomes Neelkanth

To protect the universe from the poison's destructive effects, Lord Shiva himself consumed it, holding it in his throat. This act of immense sacrifice earned him the epithet 'Neelkanth' (Blue-Throated). The narrative served as a poignant reminder to the assembled devotees of Lord Shiva's pivotal role in safeguarding creation.

Acharya Naval Kishore Ji Shastri further elaborated that the churning was initiated on Lord Vishnu's advice to restore strength to the gods, who had been weakened by Sage Durvasa's curse. Devotees were immersed in devotion, swaying and dancing to the rhythm of Shiva bhajans, filling the atmosphere with chants of 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Om Namah Shivaya'. A grand aarti was performed for Lord Bholenath at the conclusion of the session, followed by the distribution of prasad.

Anticipation for Lord Shiva's Marriage Episode

A particular highlight for the attendees is the upcoming narration of Lord Shiva's marriage, which Acharya Naval Kishore Ji Shastri announced for the next session. The Katha is scheduled to continue until August 12.

In conjunction with the Katha, Pandit Arun Shastri Ji is continuously performing the construction of 1.25 lakh Parthiv Shivlings and the Maha Rudrabhishek Puja. Anuruddh Chansauria, District Propagation Chief of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, has urged all Sanatani brethren and dharma-loving individuals to attend the Katha in large numbers to accrue spiritual merit.
