Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Flotilla, Detains 450 Activists Including Lawmakers

Israeli naval forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla on Wednesday night in the Mediterranean Sea, detaining around 450 activists, including European lawmakers and high-profile figures like Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. The flotilla — more than 40 boats carrying a symbolic amount of aid — had set sail to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Mass Detentions and Deportations

Hundreds of Israeli police officers were deployed to the southern port of Ashdod to process the detainees. Authorities said the activists were “safe and in good health” and would be deported. Israel shared videos of over 600 police working on Yom Kippur to register them.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised his navy for stopping the flotilla, calling it a “provocation” and saying its interception prevented a “delegitimisation campaign.” Israel argues the naval blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from importing weapons, but critics denounce it as collective punishment.

Humanitarian and Political Context

The flotilla sought to establish a humanitarian sea corridor amid severe shortages in Gaza, where more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The war was triggered by the October 7 Hamas attack that left 1,200 Israelis dead and 251 abducted.

Israel imposed its blockade on Gaza in 2007, tightening it further during the current war. At one point in March 2024, it sealed the strip off from all food, medicine, and goods for 2 ½ months, contributing to famine conditions.
