An 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair was killed on Tuesday after being struck by a car driven by Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez, according to Italian media reports.
The fatal accident occurred near Inter’s training facility in Appiano Gentile, just outside Milan. Early police investigations suggest the elderly man may have suffered a sudden medical episode, causing him to veer off a cycle path and into the traffic lane where Martínez’s vehicle was travelling.
The 26-year-old Spanish goalkeeper and other nearby motorists immediately stopped to assist. Emergency responders, including an air ambulance, arrived quickly, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martínez, who was reportedly in a state of shock but uninjured, has been cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.
As a mark of respect, Inter Milan cancelled head coach Cristian Chivu’s scheduled press conference following the tragic incident.
