A critical 1,700-mm water pipeline burst near Mhow, triggering a massive water crisis across multiple parts of Indore on Friday.

To initiate the repairs, civic authorities had to shut down pumps across all three phases and completely empty the pipeline before work could begin.

The extensive restoration work lasted for nearly 13 hours, finally wrapping up late at night. Water eventually reached the city after 5:00 am on Friday, causing severe shortages in morning supply zones.

Dozens of Localities Left Dry or with Low Pressure

The disruption heavily impacted local distribution, leaving 44 tank zones completely without water and 26 overhead tanks only partially filled.

As a result, residents experienced low-pressure and short-duration supply, with many areas suffering shortages from Thursday evening through Friday.

The complete lack of supply hit several major localities, including:

• Scheme 59 and Bilawali
• Bhanwarkuan and Khatiwala Tank
• Bengali Chouraha and Musakhedi
• Mahalaxmi Nagar, Sukhliya, Mahavir Nagar, and Loha Mandi

Additionally, extremely low water pressure was reported in Bijalpur, Khajrana, Hawa Bangla, Vidur Nagar, Reti Mandi, Silicon City, and Sarvasuvidha Nagar.

Weather Disruptions and Crackdown on Water Theft

Adding to the city's woes, heavy rainfall on Friday morning triggered a power outage, which further complicated the civic body's supply efforts.

In some areas, water continued to flow despite the power outage, but at extremely low pressure due to the empty tanks.

In response to the crisis, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) intensified its crackdown on the illegal extraction of water, confiscating 497 water-drawing motors to prevent illegal usage during this crunch period.

Civic officials confirmed that complaints regarding low-pressure water supply continue to pour in from several affected localities.

Airtel Penalized ₹5 Lakh for Pipeline Damage

The Indore Municipal Corporation has slapped a penalty of ₹5 lakh on telecom giant Airtel for causing the Narmada pipeline damage.

The company, which had conditional permission for cable-laying in Zone-13, reportedly damaged the pipeline during its work, leading to massive water wastage.

Municipal Commissioner Kshitij Singhal took serious note of the negligence and officially issued a show-cause notice to the telecom company.
