Indonesia Quake Kills 20, Damage Widespread

A devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores Island early on Saturday, claiming the lives of at least 20 people and causing widespread destruction. The powerful tremor has left authorities scrambling to assess the full extent of the damage and reach affected communities.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake hit at 5:58 am local time (21:58 GMT Friday). Its epicentre was located approximately 68 kilometres (42 miles) north-northwest of the city of Ende, in the East Nusa Tenggara province. The quake originated at a shallow depth of just 10 km (6.2 miles), which often leads to more intense shaking at the surface.

Aftershocks Intensify Concerns

Following the initial powerful quake, the region experienced a series of three significant aftershocks within a mere half-hour period. These subsequent tremors registered magnitudes of 5.9, 5.6, and 6.1, amplifying fears and potentially causing further damage to already weakened structures. The intensity of these aftershocks underscores the volatile nature of the seismic activity in the area.

Emergency response efforts are underway, with rescuers in the port town of Maumere, also in East Nusa Tenggara province, reporting the grim toll of 20 dead, six injured, and two individuals trapped beneath rubble. Fathur Rahman, the head of Maumere’s rescue agency, confirmed these figures, highlighting the immediate impact of the disaster on local populations.

Challenges in Reaching Epicentre

Significant challenges are being faced in reaching the Nagekeo regency, an area situated closest to the earthquake's epicentre. Communications networks in Nagekeo have been severely affected, hindering rescue operations and the ability to gather crucial information from the most impacted zone. Fathur Rahman informed Reuters news agency that teams have yet to establish contact or reach the regency, indicating a potential for higher casualty figures or greater needs in that area.

The Indonesian government and disaster management agencies are coordinating relief efforts, focusing on search and rescue operations and providing immediate aid to those affected. The remote nature of some of the affected islands and the extent of the damage are presenting logistical hurdles for aid delivery. Authorities are working to overcome these obstacles to ensure that all communities receive necessary support.
