India's FTA Stance with US: Better Proposals to Secure Deal
India will only consider an FTA with the US if proposals offer superior benefits for Indian goods and services.

India's Stance on US FTA: A Demand for Superior Offers
India has clearly articulated its stance on any potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, stated that India will only consider an FTA if the proposal from the US offers more advantageous terms for Indian goods and services compared to those offered by competing nations. The government is prioritizing the interests of domestic industries and national priorities in its trade policies.
Speaking in New Delhi, where he highlighted key aspects of India's trade diplomacy, Goyal emphasized India's commitment to ensuring 'level playing field' in any bilateral trade agreement. This implies that Indian products and services should receive access to the US market that is equal to or better than that granted to countries like Vietnam or Bangladesh.
Safeguarding Sensitive Sectors and Competitive Advantage
According to Goyal, the Indian government's primary concerns include safeguarding crucial domestic sectors such as agriculture, dairy, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These sectors should not be adversely affected by any global agreement. This necessitates a balanced approach to trade rules and tariffs, ensuring mutual benefits for both nations.
This approach will guarantee that significant pillars of India's economy receive adequate support to navigate global competition. The government aims to ensure that these vital sectors are not disadvantaged in international trade.
Emphasis on Strategic Partnerships and Multilateral Forums
Currently, bilateral trade between India and the US is experiencing continuous growth. However, both nations are focusing more on resolving specific trade barriers and strengthening strategic partnerships rather than signing a formal FTA.
As part of its economic diplomacy, India is actively pursuing enhanced economic cooperation with the US through multilateral forums like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). This demonstrates India's intent to diversify and make its trade relations resilient to safeguard national interests.
