India’s Electronics Production Up 6x, Exports Jump 8x in 11 Years: Ashwini Vaishnaw

India has witnessed a six-fold rise in electronics production and an eight-fold surge in exports over the last 11 years, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and vision for building a strong manufacturing ecosystem.

Electronics production increased from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports grew from ₹0.38 lakh crore to ₹3.3 lakh crore, the minister said in a series of posts on X.

Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM), investments worth over ₹13,475 crore have been attracted, resulting in production of ₹9.8 lakh crore so far.

Vaishnaw said electronics manufacturing has created 25 lakh jobs in the past decade. “This is real economic growth at the grassroots level. As we scale semiconductors and component manufacturing, job creation will accelerate,” he said.

The minister noted that the PLI scheme has generated over 1.3 lakh jobs in the last five years, with participation from both global and domestic manufacturers. Electronics has now become India’s third-largest export category, rising from seventh place earlier.

India is currently the second-largest mobile phone manufacturing country in the world. The number of mobile manufacturing units has jumped from just two in 2014-15 to nearly 300 today, with 99.2% of mobile handsets sold in India now made domestically.

Mobile phone production rose from ₹0.18 lakh crore to ₹5.5 lakh crore, while exports surged from a negligible ₹0.01 lakh crore to ₹2 lakh crore, reflecting the success of the Make in India initiative.

Highlighting the next phase of growth, Vaishnaw said the government is now focusing on modules, components, sub-modules, raw materials, and manufacturing equipment, moving beyond finished products.

The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has received 249 applications, representing ₹1.15 lakh crore in investment commitments, projected production of ₹10.34 lakh crore, and creation of 1.42 lakh jobs—the highest-ever investment commitment in India’s electronics sector.

On semiconductors, the minister said 10 units have been approved so far, with three already in pilot or early production. “Fabs and ATMPs from India will soon supply chips to phone and electronics manufacturers,” he said.

“From finished products to components, production is growing and exports are rising. Global players are confident, Indian companies are competitive, and jobs are being created. This is the real ‘Make in India’ impact story,” Vaishnaw concluded.
