India’s 42nd Vande Bharat Express to Run With 20 Coaches From January 26: Route, Capacity Details

What happened:
Indian Railways has upgraded the country’s 42nd Vande Bharat Express by increasing its rake strength to 20 coaches, a move aimed at meeting rising passenger demand. The enhanced configuration comes into effect from January 26, 2026.

Why it matters now:
The Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central corridor is among the busiest premium rail routes in the country. With demand consistently exceeding available seats, the temporary addition of coaches is expected to ease booking pressure and improve travel convenience for passengers.

According to Western Railway, the Vande Bharat Express will operate with 20 coaches instead of the standard 16 between January 26 and March 7, 2026.

Railway officials said the step has been taken “in view of the increasing demand from passengers” and is expected to provide greater comfort, convenience and safety during the journey.
