"There is indeed a visible increase in women's enrolment in AI and digital skills courses in recent years, in line with their rising participation in technical and STEM education in India. As per a UGC report, women's participation in technical education increased by almost 15% in just three years, from 2022 to 2025."
The growth is particularly rapid in areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science.
Nidhi Aggarwal, a program manager with 25 years of experience, emphasizes the importance of continuous learning in the tech industry. Srimathy Kesavan, a recent engineering graduate, opted for GenAI skills over campus placements, landing a job as an LLM engineer.
Assistant Professor Tejas Bodas from IIIT Hyderabad suggests that online platforms offer lower entry barriers, attracting women from diverse backgrounds. He adds,
"I think the main reason for the higher percentage of women enrolments is the lower entry barriers that online platforms offer. I believe women from diverse backgrounds (no-CS, non-engineering) have easier access to learning GenAI than traditional ML/AI engineering."
Motivations and Aspirations
The motivations for learning AI are varied.

Despite the progress, a significant challenge remains.
"The irony of a 'broken pipeline' for women's progression into leadership roles in AI and high-tech jobs points to persistent structural gaps," says Professor Khare.
A research study indicates that the gender leadership ratio in AI startups in Bengaluru is only 8%. This calls for concerted efforts to support women's transition into leadership roles.
