AI Innovation Triumphs at Mitsubishi Electric Cup
Team Nexus AI, a group of Indian students, has developed an innovative artificial intelligence platform. The system simplifies industrial Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming. This innovation earned them the Gold Cup at the prestigious Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
Their platform allows users to describe machine control logic in natural language. The AI then automatically converts this into Structured Text code. This offers a modern alternative to traditional ladder logic programming.
Revolutionizing Industrial Automation
The students spent months developing a robust AI platform. It is capable of generating executable control programs for Mitsubishi Electric IQ-F (FX5U) PLCs. The system was validated using an Automated Dip Dyeing Machine. The machine was powered entirely by AI-generated control code executed using Mitsubishi Electric hardware. This included PLCs, HMIs, servo motors and FA components.
The final round was held at the MIT Pune campus. The system underwent intensive evaluation by an eight-member jury. The jury comprised automation programmers, ladder-logic specialists and Mitsubishi Electric R&D engineers.
Rigorous Evaluation and Industry Recognition
The jury assessed the platform’s architecture, logic integrity, safety framework, and scalability. Senior leadership from Mitsubishi Electric India, including Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, interacted with the team. They expressed interest in potential future collaboration.
"The research orientation of our faculty is fuelling innovation built on strong fundamentals. This is the third national industry competition won by Sona student teams in recent months — after Capgemini and Google Gemini — reflecting the focused mentoring ecosystem at the institution," said Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona College of Technology.
Global Competition Beckons
Team Nexus AI will now represent Mitsubishi Electric India at the Global Mitsubishi Electric Factory Automation (MECA) Competition. The competition is scheduled for September 2026.
The team was selected from nearly 300 national entries in the Mitsubishi Electric competition. They underwent multiple stages of technical evaluation. They were supported by Mitsubishi Electric mentors and trainers. The team was declared Gold Cup Winner, receiving a Rs 1,00,000 cash prize.
