Indian-origin woman found dead in Maryland apartment, former boyfriend charged with murder

Nikitha Godishala, a 27-year-old Indian-origin woman who was reported missing earlier this month, has been found dead inside an apartment in Columbia, Maryland, US authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The discovery has led to murder charges against her former boyfriend, triggering an ongoing criminal investigation and prompting intervention from the Embassy of India in the United States.

Missing report and recovery of the body

According to local police, Godishala, a resident of Ellicott City, was reported missing on January 2, 2026. Days later, officers located her body inside an apartment in the 10100 block of Twin Rivers Road in Columbia.

Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of death, stating that the investigation remains active.

Suspect identified and charged

Investigators identified the apartment as belonging to Arjun Sharma, 26, whom police described as Godishala’s former boyfriend.

As reported by FOX 5, Sharma himself approached police on January 2 to file the missing person report. He told officers that he had last seen Godishala on December 31, 2025, at his apartment.

Following evidence gathered during the investigation, police executed an arrest warrant against Sharma, charging him with first-degree murder and second-degree murder.

Officials clarified that <u>no motive has been established so far</u>.

Suspect left the US on day of missing report

In a key development, investigators confirmed that Sharma left the United States for India on the same day he reported Godishala missing.
