India-US Trade Pact Update: Joint Statement Expected Soon, Tariff Cuts Likely Within a Week, Says Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India and the United States are close to finalising the first phase of a new bilateral trade agreement.
A joint statement is expected within days, followed by tariff reductions through a White House executive order.
The announcement signals a major step forward in economic cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.

 • What happened: India and the US plan to release a joint statement on their trade pact within four to five days, with tariff cuts expected soon after.

 • Why it matters now: The agreement could reshape trade flows, investment sentiment, and export opportunities across key sectors.

 • What changes for people: Lower tariffs may benefit exporters, manufacturers, and industries linked to energy, aviation, and technology.

 • Who is affected: Indian exporters, US companies, aviation firms, energy markets, and global trade observers.

Speaking to reporters, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement is nearly ready and could be formally signed by mid-March after the joint statement is issued.

Tariff reduction timeline and joint statement

According to Goyal, once the joint statement is finalised, the United States is expected to lower tariffs to around 18 percent through an executive order. Indian officials said legal formalities will follow before both sides implement wider changes.

A joint India-US statement is expected within days, which could trigger tariff reductions and mark the start of the first phase of the trade partnership.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal added that the joint statement will later be converted into a formal legal agreement, allowing both countries to operationalise tariff adjustments.

$500 billion import outlook and strategic sectors

Goyal indicated that India may import goods worth at least $500 billion from the United States over the next five years, including energy resources, aircraft, and semiconductor-related equipment. He said expanding industrial capacity and rising aviation demand are key drivers behind the projected purchases.

The minister highlighted that aircraft orders alone could reach $70-80 billion, with engines and spare parts potentially taking the total to about $100 billion.

Why this trade deal matters for India and the US

 • Economy: Lower tariffs could improve export competitiveness and attract new investments.

 • Energy security: Increased energy imports may help India diversify supply sources.

 • Technology and aviation: Semiconductor and aircraft deals could strengthen strategic industrial partnerships.

Analysts say the agreement reflects a broader push to deepen economic ties amid shifting global supply chains and geopolitical realignments.
