The Cliff News | 1 October 2026

India's dominant bowling unit delivered a masterclass to crush Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the semi-final of the Asian Games, propelling the Men in Blue into a highly anticipated final clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. The bowlers, capitalizing on a challenging pitch, bowled Sri Lanka out for a paltry 45, their second-lowest T20I total.

The victory sets the stage for the first India vs. Pakistan final of 2026 in this tournament, with a gold medal on the line. While India's ODI side recently chased a colossal 406 with ease, the T20I squad showcased their mettle on a treacherous track, setting a competitive target of 169 for 7 before their bowlers ran riot.

Kishan Anchors India's Innings on Difficult Pitch

Despite the challenging conditions, Ishan Kishan starred for India, remaining unbeaten on 80 off just 46 deliveries. Kishan rode his luck at times, with several aerial shots landing in no-man's land, and he was also dropped by Nuwanidu Fernando on 56. Nevertheless, his crucial knock provided India with a defendable total on a pitch that offered considerable assistance to the bowlers.

Other contributions included Sooryavanshi with 38 runs. Sri Lanka's bowling attack, featuring Arachchige and Ratnayake, managed to pick up wickets, with Arachchige taking 2-28 and Ratnayake claiming 2-32. However, the overall score proved more than adequate for India's potent bowling lineup.

Bowlers' Day Out as Sri Lanka Collapses

The chase for Sri Lanka turned into a dismal affair, characterized by a catastrophic batting performance and exceptional Indian bowling. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone with his impeccable line and length, bowling Test-like spells that proved unplayable on the cracked surface. Axar Patel also contributed significantly, bowling 14 dot balls and picking up two wickets, as India completed the match with a team hat-trick.

Compounding Sri Lanka's woes were three run-outs, two of which accounted for their top-four batters. This unfortunate sequence of events saw them bundled out for 45, a total that ranks as the second-lowest in men's T20Is at the Asian Games. This score also matches the joint-lowest T20I total for a Full-Member team, a record previously held by West Indies against England in 2019.

Spin Dominance on a Turning Track

The strategy of packing the bowling attack with spinners proved highly effective for both sides, with India fielding four and Sri Lanka three. In a match that saw spinners bowl 83% of all deliveries (149 out of 179), they were instrumental in taking 12 wickets. The spinners maintained a tight economy of 6.56, bowling 73 dot balls, while the pacers conceded runs at a higher rate.

Bumrah, though a quick bowler, was exceptional, taking 2 wickets for 7 runs in his two overs. His spell was a testament to his skill in exploiting the conditions. The bowlers' control was evident from the very first ball of the innings, with Bumrah striking early.

Early Wickets and Run-Outs Seal Sri Lanka's Fate

The Sri Lankan chase began disastrously. Sineth Jayawardena attempted to take on Bumrah early but was undone by the seamer's sharp in-swing. Sohan de Livera became Bumrah's second victim, nicking behind to the keeper due to an exaggerated angle from over the wicket. This marked a historic moment for India in men's T20Is, as they took two wickets without conceding a run.

The treacherous nature of the pitch was further highlighted when Bumrah's second over produced a ball that bounced awkwardly, forcing Sanju Samson to leap high for a catch. Nuwanidu Fernando, the batter at the time, was fortunate that the ball did not move further towards the stumps. Earlier in India's innings, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson fell to spin. Samson was cleaned up by Tharindu Ratnayake after attempting an inside-out shot, and later, Shreyas Iyer was dismissed by Sahan Arachchige, who extracted sharp turn to castle him.
