India’s technology sector is showing clear signs of a hiring slowdown, with active job openings falling sharply at the start of 2026. Data released by Xpheno shows that tech job openings dropped to 1.03 lakh in January, down 24% from a year earlier, marking a significant cooling from the aggressive post-COVID recruitment cycle.

At its peak during the pandemic-led digital surge, tech hiring had touched 2.6 lakh openings in January 2022. The current numbers underline how far the market has pulled back since then.

Why tech hiring is slowing

Industry experts attribute the decline to a mix of sectoral headwinds, hiring excesses during the pandemic, and a strategic shift in how companies build teams.

Kamal Karanth, co-founder of Xpheno, said most technology and engineering teams were fully staffed or even overstaffed during the boom years. As a result, companies are now in a rebalancing phase, focusing less on expanding headcount and more on efficiency and precision hiring.

Sharp fall in core tech roles

The slowdown is most pronounced in core technology functions. According to Xpheno’s data, active openings for tech and engineering roles fell by 37%, making it the steepest decline across all functions.

In contrast, consulting roles grew by 4%, while sales and marketing openings rose by 3%, signalling a shift in priorities. Companies appear to be strengthening advisory capabilities and business development teams to secure new deals rather than expanding delivery teams.

Shift toward strategic and revenue-linked hiring

Analysts say the hiring pattern reflects a broader strategic reset. Biswajeet Mahapatra, Principal Analyst at Forrester, noted that organisations are prioritising roles with direct business impact, particularly those linked to customer engagement and execution.

He said technology hiring is increasingly focused on niche and high-impact skills, including artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cloud architecture, rather than broad-based recruitment.

Internal skilling over external recruitment

Another key trend is the growing emphasis on upskilling existing employees. Mahapatra said companies are investing heavily in internal skilling programmes to bridge capability gaps instead of relying solely on lateral hiring.

While demand remains strong for AI-led solutions, cybersecurity, and digital transformation, hiring in these areas is selective and skill-specific, not volume-driven.
