India Secures Russian Oil Supply
At least seven tankers carrying Russian oil initially destined for China have changed course for India.
This shift comes as India seeks to bolster its energy security amid disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran war. India recently received a temporary waiver from the US to purchase Russian oil.
Tankers Headed to Indian Ports
The Aqua Titan tanker, loaded in the Baltic Sea, is expected to arrive at New Mangalore port on Saturday, March 21. It originally planned to dock at China's Rizhao port.
Another tanker, the Suezmax Zouzou N, is heading towards Sikka port in Gujarat's Jamnagar, estimated to arrive on March 25. It changed its course in early March.
Increased Russian Oil Purchases
Indian refiners have increased purchases of Russian oil after the US granted a 30-day waiver, coinciding with the near closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.
India has already purchased approximately 30 million barrels of Russian crude in just one week, reversing earlier import reductions from Moscow.
In January, oil imports from Russia had fallen to 21% as India negotiated a trade deal with the US.
Strategic Importance of Russian Oil
The arrival of Russian crude offers relief for India, which imports 90% of its energy needs.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial, with 40-50% of India's crude oil imports passing through it. Half of the country's LNG imports and most LPG shipments also transit the Strait.

So far, three Indian-flagged tankers carrying crude oil and LPG have reached Indian ports after transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Around 20 ships are still awaiting clearance to pass through the channel.
