India-Russia: Jaishankar's Moscow Visit Gives New Direction to Bilateral Ties

New Momentum for Bilateral Relations

Amidst global geopolitical upheavals, India and Russia have taken significant steps to further cement their 'special and privileged strategic partnership.' External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, on a two-day official visit to Russia, held extensive bilateral talks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

This visit, preceding the upcoming annual bilateral summit, has provided a new roadmap for economic and diplomatic synergy between the two nations. During his special meeting at the Kremlin, Dr. Jaishankar conveyed a special message and best wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Economic Cooperation and Trade Goals

The Indian External Affairs Minister engaged in detailed bilateral discussions with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, focusing on enhancing mutual coordination on Eurasian security and various global priorities. Both countries agreed that India-Russia cooperation has consistently deepened, even in a complex international environment.

Dr. Jaishankar also participated in the 27th meeting of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission with Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. He shared on 'X' that this meeting, covering trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation, was highly successful.

Discussions centered on extensive cooperation in critical areas such as trade, investment, energy, fertilizers, nuclear energy, connectivity, technology, space, and mobility. Both sides emphasized implementation and results, prioritizing sector-specific targets and actively resolving issues.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that both sides also agreed on strengthening engagement with businesses by linking institutional mechanisms with industry priorities, identifying practical obstacles, and improving policy response. This underscores a commitment beyond high-level talks to resolving ground-level issues and facilitating trade relations.

Trade Imbalance and Future Plans

Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted that bilateral trade in goods has grown more than fourfold in the last five years, from approximately $13 billion in 2021-22 to about $60 billion in 2025-26. However, this rapid expansion has been accompanied by a significant increase in the trade imbalance, growing from around $6.6 billion to over $50 billion.

Dr. Jaishankar identified addressing this imbalance as one of the top priorities. To rectify this and achieve the shared goal of $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, the External Affairs Minister stressed crucial steps like market access, removing tariff and non-tariff barriers, strengthening payment mechanisms, and further bolstering business-to-business relations.

The strategic partnership between India and Russia, particularly in areas like energy, defense, and technology, enhances their significance on the global stage. This Moscow visit has provided new impetus to these ties and a solid foundation for navigating future challenges.
